Overview

Owing to its small territory and low level of industrialization, Uruguay’s contribution to the process of generation of global warming is not significant. With an economy based mainly on the use of natural resources, however, Uruguay’s vulnerability to climate change is high. The degree of vulnerability is conditioned by certain geographical or location factors. Part of the country is situated on the coast of the River Plate –a system of great natural variability- downstream of a large basin, receiving the impact of activities and works developed in several regions comprising the basin. Further, it is subject to the effects of complex ocean-land-atmosphere interactions in the Southwest Atlantic, a fact which contributes to its marked natural variability.
